One teen in a group of five girls arrested and charged with the murder of a 64-year-old man in Washington, D.C., said they did it because they were “bored,” according to reports.
WUSA, a local CBS affiliate, reported that one of the girls, age 15, pleaded guilty last week to a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon and was subsequently sentenced to three years in juvenile prison.
The 15-year-old was required to testify at the trial of two of the other girls thought to be involved in the incident.
During the trial, she told jurors that the group had been looking for something to do while on their way home from a skate park in Maryland when she proposed they “find someone to beat up,” WUSA reported.
When asked why she made the suggestion, the outlet said, she replied, “Because we were bored.”
An update shared by the Metropolitan Police Department said that on October 17, 2023, at 12:54 a.m., officers responded to a “report of a man down” in the 6200 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest.
The man, identified as 64-year-old Reggie Brown, died at the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later ruled his cause of death as blunt force trauma, and his death was determined a homicide.
On March 28, a 13-year-old girl was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, and on March 29, another 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl were arrested on the same charges.
Two more girls, ages 13 and 15, were arrested on the same charges in July.
Newsweek has contacted the Metropolitan Police Department via email for comment on the incident.
Two of the five girls have pleaded guilty to the charges, including the 15-year-old who testified as a witness in Tuesday’s trial, NBC4 Washington reported.
The outlet reported that Brown was disabled and that according to the 15-year-old, he had been out walking when he was attacked by another man, who has not been identified.
The girl told jurors that the man was wearing a blue coat and had pushed Brown to the ground, NBC4 Washington reported.
“He then walked up to us, and I asked him why he was beating him up,” she reportedly said.
According to the outlet, she continued: “I asked if we could help. He said yes.”
The 15-year-old also said the man never threatened the girls if they refused to participate in attacking Brown, and she described how the girls hit Brown, pulled off his pants and kicked him, the outlet reported.
The report added that in footage of the beating recorded on one of the girls’ phones, Brown could be seen unconscious and bleeding.
