Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Yankaba Eastern Bye-pass Roundabout, Kano, have arrested a suspected Juma’at mosque vandal.
The Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC Kano State Command, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the arrest of the suspect in a statement on Monday.
He said the suspect, Murtala Aliyu Muhd, 35, a resident of Dawakin Dakata Quarters, Nassarawa Local Government Area, Kano, was apprehended late in the night after gaining entry into the Dakata Jum’at mosque through its window.
“The suspect successfully stole and made away with one of the mosque solar energy batteries supplying electricity to the worshipping centre.
“The following day, as he was conveying the battery to market for sale, he was intercepted and arrested by the corps personnel on security duty at a checkpoint, having not provided any satisfactory account of where he got and had been taking it to.
“Recently, the same suspect was alleged to have stolen over N300,000 from the same mosque, possessed by one of the mosque’s servants, the crimes of which the suspect confessed to have committed,” the statement said.
Similarly, another suspected vandal, 19-year-old Musbahu Sani of Darmanawa Quarters, Tarauni Local Government Area, was apprehended.
According to Abdullahi, Sani was arrested in possession of large armoured cables believed to have been vandalised and stolen.
He said upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to having removed the wire on an electricity installation (transformer) at Darmanawa quarters.
“He was taking it to market when he was captured by civil defence along Court road, Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano State,” he said.
He said after the investigation, the two suspects would be charged to court for appropriate prosecution.
